Across the country in large cities, buildings often account for the majority of energy use and carbon emissions.
In effort to create a more energy-aware community and reduce energy waste, the Des Moines City Council passed on June 3, 2019, the Energy and Water Benchmarking Ordinance requiring owners of buildings 25,000 sq. ft or larger to benchmark their energy and water usage.
Data is due July 1st each year. Applications for exemption are due May 1st each year. Note: After that date, an administrative exemption may be applied based on a property(ies) specific circumstances.

Des Moines Building Benchmarking Data

Reported building energy and water benchmarking data is now live for public and private properties. Data reflects 2019, 2020, and 2021 calendar year reporting cycles for all reported properties.

The City of Des Moines Benchmarking Program will continue to work with property owners who have not reported or have inaccurate or incomplete data. Check back for updates on specific properties.
